Explore History on the Gollizno Route and the Quarries
The Gollizno and Quarries Route is a fascinating trail that It starts in the upper part of the municipality of Portilla, near the Viñuela Bridge. Along this route, walkers have the opportunity to explore a region rich in history and ethnography, with vestiges that transport us to bygone eras and to the customs and ways of life of its inhabitants.
Exploring the Trail
The route begins by crossing the Viñuela Bridge, from where a path begins that follows the Barranco de la Hociquilla. The path, sometimes blurred, takes adventurers along the small channel of the ravine. to the Cemillo del Cura, which rises to 1,370 meters above sea level.
Along the route, hikers can observe traces of the ethnographic wealth of the area, including the influence of livestock farming, the presence of the Cañada Real, vestiges of agricultural activities in high altitude areas, the exploitation of wood and resin, as well as the marble-jasper quarries who played a key role in the construction of the Royal Palace of Madrid and other notable buildings.
The Way Back
The way back continues down the Shadow of the Alley and continues along a horseshoe path that leads back to Portilla. Along this descent, walkers can enjoy panoramic views and cross curious rock formations, such as the La Callejuela Strait, an opening carved by hand into the rock.
Arriving in Portilla, its urban structure is revealed, centered on the picturesque Plaza del Cristo, which serves as the epicenter of the town's life. The streets of Portilla reflect the rural structure of the houses, and some of them retain traditional elements, such as the Tejaroz and the ironwork. In addition, it is interesting to note that some streets have traditional names that are dear to the town's inhabitants, such as Calle del Agua del Canton and Calle del Olmo.
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel, located above the Plaza del Cristo, is a prominent landmark. The entrance features a semicircular arch supported by stone columns, leading to an anteroom covered by a beautiful wooden coffered ceiling, an impressive architectural feature that enriches the visit to the village.
