Discovering the Cuervo River Trail: A Journey to Nature in its Pure State
The Crow River Trail, shows us this emblematic corner that stands out for its scenic beauty and its importance both in geological and biological terms. In this article, we will guide you through this wonderful journey that has been designated as Natural Monument due to its geomorphological relevance, becoming an exceptional example of a calcareous landscape. In addition, it is listed as a Place of Geological Interest by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME).
The Magic of Water, Rock and Vegetation
The Cuervo River Trail presents us with a scenario where the water, rock and abundant vegetation intertwine to create the impressive barriers of tuff or travertine that retain the riverbed. The beauty of this place lies in the waterfall that has formed over time, thanks to the accumulation of calcium carbonate attached to the vegetation, creating a petrified spectacle.
Home of Protected Species
This Natural Monument, thanks to its abundant rainfall and its high altitude, houses a variety of protected flora and fauna species, some of them even in danger. Among the plant species, the Scots pine stands out as the most abundant and evident, followed by the creeping juniper, which is found in the coldest and most exposed peaks. In addition, this place is home to various species of terrestrial orchids, which add a touch of color to the beauty of the environment.
A Route for Everyone
The route is labeled as “Hiking”, but can also be considered a walk, since it does not present significant difficulties. Even the section that leads to the “Waterfalls” is accessible for people with reduced mobility, thanks to the presence of wooden ramps that facilitate access.
The Best Time to Enjoy
The Cuervo River Trail is a destination that can be enjoyed all year round, but some seasons stand out for their particularities. Spring is ideal to appreciate a greater amount of water, autumn will surprise you with its color, and winter can offer you the view of frozen waterfalls, creating an especially beautiful atmosphere.
Tips for your Visit
The path begins at a recreational area that offers parking. In case the parking lot is full, you can park near the two restaurants in the area. At the beginning of the route, you will find information panels and, to the right, a path that takes you to a fountain, which is the only one on the path, allowing you to refill water before starting.
During the walk, you will go through a wooden walkway and some stairs (or accessible ramp), which will soon take you to the waterfall viewpoint. Further ahead, you will find another viewpoint that will allow you to see the wet tuffs with their curtain formations up close.
Continuing the route, you will walk next to the Cuervo River and cross a bridge to reach the esplanade, which is the plain that is formed thanks to the travertine barrier. Finally, at the end of the trail, you will be able to see the source of the river, which flows from a crack in the rock.
