Discover a natural treasure in the heart of the Cuenca Mountains

Located in the Júcar River basin, in the majestic Serranía de Cuenca, is the Marquesado Lagoon, a wetland with karst characteristics of great importance. This lagoon is formed by the retention of water from Arroyo del Soto, which is closed by a travertine barrier. With an altitude of 1,360 meters and an area of 372 hectares, this beautiful wetland offers a spectacle of nature that you will not want to miss.

Exploration of the depths

The Marquesado Lagoon can reach a maximum depth of 5.45 meters, and its waters are fresh and permanent, with a carbonate-calcium-magnesium composition. This karst environment is one of the few examples in Western Europe where a travertine barrier creates a wetland, similar to the Ruidera lagoons wave of Taravilla in the Alto Tajo Natural Park.

If you want to explore this magnificent wetland, you can start your tour from the picturesque town of Laguna del Marquesado. Upon entering the town, you will find an information panel about the nature reserve and the interpretive trail. We suggest you leave your car in the town and continue on foot north, following the signs.

Discover the interpretive trail

The tour will take you to cross the Laguna river through a wooden walkway and surround the lagoon, going up its east side and descending on the west, until returning to the starting point in the town of Laguna del Marquesado. This interpretive trail, prepared for visits, offers an enriching experience. Besides, It is marked by a series of interpretive signs that will provide you with information about the geology, flora and fauna of the environment.

Enjoy a low difficulty hike

This walk, classified as low difficulty, is ideal for visitors of all ages and can be done at any time of the year. However, it is important to be well prepared for the cold in winter. The approximate duration of the tour is a little more than an hour, and the total distance is 5.1 km on a circular trail.
