A natural jewel nestled in the Escabas River canyon

Interpretive Itinerary of the Lagunillos Recreational Area: Treasures in the Natural Park

This interpretive itinerary invites you to discover the hidden treasures in the Natural Park next to the Escabas River. This charming place, which is reached by following the upper course of the Escabas River, houses a short route adorned with interpretive panels that highlight the natural resources of the Park. Here, you can enjoy an unforgettable day surrounded by nature.

A Stunning Natural Environment

The surroundings of Los Lagunillos are framed by majestic pine forests that dominate the river valley. This valley is delimited by impressive geological formations of karstic origin, which include canyons, escarpments and, especially, the Featured Lagunillo. This little lake, which gives its name to this beautiful place, is worth a visit.

A Place for All Seasons

This trail is suitable to visit in any season of the year. However, in winter, access can be complicated due to the presence of snow or ice on the road. Therefore, attempting access under these adverse conditions is inadvisable. During your visit, you will find a natural, purified water source that will provide you with fresh, clean water.

Discovering the Lagunillo

The “Lagunillo,” with its distinctive circular shape, represents a «geomorphological element of special protection» in Castilla-La Mancha. Although it is commonly called sinkhole, in reality, it is better known as torca. Today, only one sinkhole can be observed, but it is possible that other small lakes have disappeared due to silting or total erosion of the area, leaving only the one we see today.

The Origin of a Natural Wonder

The origin of this formation is explained by the underground dissolution of sedimented limestone materials, which causes a subsidence of the land and the subsequent appearance of groundwater inside. This geological phenomenon is responsible for the creation of the “Lagunillo,” a natural element of great relevance in the region.

In this place, surrounded by the beauty of nature, you will have the opportunity to learn about the natural resources of the Park and explore the wonders that this corner has to offer. Enjoy your day in this unique environment!

How to Get to this Natural Gem

To get to Los Lagunillos, we drive along the paved forest road that connects Las Majadas with Vega del Codorno and Poyatos. Upon reaching the bottom of the Escabas River valley, next to the bridge that crosses it, we take another paved road that takes us to Lagunillos. There is signage at the intersection.
