Hiking in La Alcarria. Discover Priego and the Escabas River
Welcome to Priego, a charming corner located in a wide valley surrounded by majestic hills that will leave you breathless! Among these hills, the imposing Sierra del Rodenal stands out, home of the majestic Step of 1,284 meters high, and the impressive Sierra de Valdeseco, which houses the summit known as The Degollada, rising to 1,258 meters above sea level.
He Escabas River, protagonist of the history and natural beauty of this region, meanders through the valley from east to west, carving a deep fissure with steep margins. This channel of transparent waters passes next to the town at an altitude of just 800 meters, after having crossed the impressive Strait of Priego.

Now, get ready for an exciting adventure in the spectacular karst environment of Hoz del Conde, the Strait of Priego and the winding and energetic Escabas River. This circular route has few slopes and will take you around the elevation known as The Hill.
We begin this hiking route in La Alcarria Conquense, from the urban center of Priego, shortly after we cross the Escabas River over a sturdy bridge and advance along a comfortable track towards the south. Halfway through the route, the route becomes a picturesque path that intertwines with sections of track and path, always looking for the course of the Escabas River, which is encased in an impressive ravine and surrounded by an exuberant variety of vegetation.
This river also played an important role in local history, as it was the scene of the laborious task of the hookers, who dragged wooden logs from the mountain forests along their riverbed to the transformation and transportation points.

From this route, you can see the traces of the defensive history of the town, which was protected by a wall flanked by several defensive towers, some vestiges of which are still preserved. In the distance, you will be able to glimpse the 16th century tower that dominates the horizon.
Upon reaching the beautiful place of El Molino, we leave the most open areas adorned with fields and olive groves, we will find ourselves again next to the Escabas River, which we will follow upstream to continue along our route, alternating the surface of our path but always parallel to the river. Finally, and after having crossed a stretch of forest, we will return to the town after once again crossing the medieval bridge where we passed at the beginning of the route.
