Lo Hueco Site

The Lo Hueco site, located in Fuentes, Cuenca, is a true treasure for lovers of paleontology and anyone intrigued by ancient life on Earth. This place transports us to an amazing period about 70 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous superior, when enormous creatures dominated the Earth. Here, in this region of what we now call the Iberian Peninsula, they walked gigantic titanosaurs, armored and fearsome, with a weight up to 30 tons. Welcome to the Pompeii of paleontologists!

An Amazing Fossil Collection

Tireless excavation efforts have resulted in the recovery of around 8,000 dinosaur fossils at the Lo Hueco site, which is located just 15 kilometers from the city of Cuenca. Among these remains, two groups of theropods have been identified, possibly dromaeosaurids, agile and smaller predators, as well as an ankylosaur. In addition, crocodile skulls, skeleton fragments and traces of other reptiles, including complete turtle shells, have been found. In total, remains of eight genera of dinosaurs, with a marked presence of titanosaur sauropods.

An Ancient Ecosystem

70 million years ago, Lo Hueco was an area of sandy channels near the coast, bathed by fresh and salt waters. At that time, Europe was forming an archipelago, made up of numerous islands, and the Iberian Peninsula was located in a position close to the Equator. This ancient landscape was full of flowering plants, which were probably the main source of food for sauropods similar to diplodocus, but more slender and vegetarian.

A Unique Discovery

Throughout the evolution of our planet, the remains of these dinosaurs were trapped in a well-defined region of these lands. Now, these fossil treasures have come to light and allow us to enjoy their history. The archaeologists found a true wonder on the ground: vertebral columns with the sacrum mounted, skulls, jaws, claws of saurians and more than 60 femurs of titanosaurs, in addition to ten almost complete skeletons. Lo Hueco is a unique site in the Old Continent and an essential place for those who wish to explore the Earth's amazing past.
