PR-CU 04 – Dehesas Trail

Discover the Dehesas Path in the Serranía Alta Conquense

This trail will take you through three well-known towns in the Serranía Alta Conquense region: Carrascosa de la Sierra, Valsalobre and Cueva del Hierro. These lands have a rich history and have been inhabited since ancient times. In Carrascosa de la Sierra, Neolithic engravings have been found that attest to the antiquity of human presence in the area. In later times, Iberians and Romans inhabited these lands and exploited their iron deposits, which were considered of high quality in Roman Hispania.

History and Nature in Harmony

During Muslim domination, this region gained strategic importance, as it became the border between the Arab domain and the kingdom of Molina de Aragón. The Arabs also exploited the saline deposits located near the town of Valsalobre, where they built shallow pools to evaporate water and obtain salt.

The surroundings of these small mountain towns are truly magical, with limestone rock landscapes sculpted by the clean waters of the mountains, spectacular gorges that house riverside forests and where griffon vultures nest. You will also find pastures with impressive oak oaks and landscapes little altered by human presence. The area is rich in flora and fauna, with the presence of deer, roe deer, wild boars and short-toed eagles, among other species.

The Tour

Carrascosa de la Sierra-Cueva del Hierro From Carrascosa de la Sierra, we head east along a bridle path that takes us into the pasture. We advance along tracks in good condition, surrounded by oaks. Then, we leave the forest to cross a moorland to the Valsalobre pasture.

We continue along tracks until we reach the town that is located at the head of a small valley. We left Valsalobre along the road that connects it with neighboring Beteta, but soon we abandoned the asphalt and took a path. Then, we faced a long climb surrounded by forests until we reached the abandoned village of Valtablado de Beteta.

We walk among high mountain meadows, moors and pine forests. Finally, we arrived at Cueva del Hierro following what was an old bridle path.

Iron Cave – Carrascosa de la Sierra Leaving Cueva del Hierro, we take an old bridle path heading north. We come to a track and turn west, towards Valtablado de Beteta. We descend along a track between trees to the vicinity of Valsalobre. We enter Valsalobre along the road that connects it with neighboring Beteta. From Valsalobre, we ascend west along a track towards the boyal pasture. We leave the forest to cross a wide meadow to the Carrascosa de la Sierra pasture. We walk along tracks in good condition within the pasture and, before leaving the forest, we take a path that takes us through mountain meadows to the outskirts of Carrascosa de la Sierra.
