Explore History and Natural Beauty on the Climb to Cerro Juez from Cueva del Hierro

A charming corner

Welcome to Iron Cave, a charming corner in the Serranía Alta Conquense, about 80 kilometers from the provincial capital. The historical roots of this town go back to ancient times, dating back to Celtiberian and Roman times, when the mountains of this region hid valuable iron deposits. The Roman presence It was noted with the flourishing mining factory, laying the foundations for future urban development.

A Town with History

During Muslim rule, Cueva del Hierro was under the jurisdiction of Beteta and, later, it was part of the influential lordships of Albarracín and Molina. With the reconquest by Alfonso VIII and the resurgence of medieval Cuenca, the iron mine once again became an abundant resource, used in the forging of the bars of the Cathedral and in the construction of old mansions in the city.

A Scenic Tour

The trail then turns north and follows a path through farmland, gradually ascending until you reach a restored traditional shed used as a lodge.

The Magic of Cerro Juez

The route continues ascending through an area with sparse vegetation until reaching the first line of trees near the repeater hill. From here, the trail continues east, following the edge of a limestone rock formation that leads towards the geodesic vertex of Cerro Juez. At the highest part of the promontory, you will find the remains of several sheepfolds built for livestock, taking advantage of the natural shelters offered by the emerging limestone.

A Spectacular Viewpoint

From the viewpoint enabled at the end of the route, next to the geodesic vertex, you will be able to enjoy a spectacular view of the town, the surroundings of the trail and the nearby lands of the Señorío de Molina.
