A natural and geological journey in the Serranía de Cuenca
The “Bookstore Trail” is an exciting round trip route that begins in the Prairie House Recreation Area, a perfect place to start your adventure. As you progress, you will encounter an intriguing geological phenomenon: alternating layers of limestone and dolomite that resemble the pages of a book, along with clay materials from the Jurassic era.
An exceptional natural environment
This tour will immerse you in abundant vegetation, combining the typical flora of the Serranía with a wide variety of species, such as hazelnuts, lindens and sorbus, that flourish thanks to the Atlantic character of the area. The trail follows the banks of the Guadiela River, increasing your chances of spotting trout, crabs, and, with a little luck, even otters, which feast on the river and its banks.
Discover the fascinating “Bookstores”
You will continue ascending the path until you reach the climax of the route: the Bookstores. Several similar formations are scattered throughout the Serranía de Cuenca due to the stratification of limestone rocks that resemble tables, also known as table limestones. This particular structure It gives us the appearance of a collection of stacked books, hence the name "Bookstores."
A spectacular waterfall
The most surprising thing about this formation, in addition to its resemblance to a rock library, is the presence of an impressive waterfall. During times of heavy rain or snowmelt, a waterfall cascades from the top of these “bookstores.” This torrent collects the waters of the Valle stream, a tributary of the Guadiela River.
Nature at its best
Along the trail, you will marvel at the diversity of plant species, such as holly (Ilex aquifolium), and tuff formations, such as the spring of the Las Truchas pool and the Arroyo del Valle ravine. Especially after days of rain or storm, the Arroyo del Valle ravine is worth admiring.
This trail is a unique opportunity to explore the natural and geological beauty of the region, as well as to observe the interesting vegetation and surprising rock formations along the Guadiela River. Don't miss this unique experience in the Serranía de Cuenca!
