There are places that, without even looking for it, become special from the moment you set foot there. Beteta was one of those unexpected discoveries that transformed a simple weekend into an unforgettable family adventure. Between the imposing gorges of the Guadiela River and as a link between the Alto Tajo and the Serranía de CuencaThis small mountain village holds treasures that deserve to be discovered calmly and in the best company.
How the idea came about
It all started with a family conversation over a Friday dinner. “What if we get lost this weekend?” my youngest son suggested, with that innocence that only children have. We were looking for something different, a destination that combines nature, history and that special charm of the towns with a taste of authenticity. After searching the internet, Beteta appeared like a revelation: a medieval castle, a spectacular sickle and the promise of outdoor adventures. The decision was made!
The journey: part of the adventure
The route from Madrid (approximately 2 and a half hours) became the first chapter of our adventure. We cross the Alcarria of Cuenca along the CM-210, with a mandatory stop in Priego to stretch your legs and try its famous homemade muffins in the Plaza Mayor. The landscape gradually changes until, suddenly, you find yourself surrounded by the impressive rock formations of the Serranía de Cuenca.

The village and its castle
The village looks like a perfect postcard, with its traditional stone and wood houses embraced by mountains. The first thing that catches your eye is Beteta Castle, eternal watchman from his privileged position. The climb up to it (about 20 minutes on foot) is worth every step: The views of the Hoz de Beteta and the valley are simply spectacular.

Final Thought
Beteta taught us that you don't need big tourist destinations to create unforgettable memories. Sometimes, the most special places are those you discover without expectations and that surprise you with their authenticity. As we watched the sunset from the castle, with the children counting the mountain goats on the slopes, we understood that we had found one of those places to which we would want to return again and again.
